New Media Curriculum Development

« Why is Site-Specific Art so Important? | Main | Exhibitor Spotlight: University of Minnesota Press »

Today New Media Caucus had number of panels and roundtables at Columbia College. I went to a roundtable called: “New Media Curriculum Development”, where Mike Salmond, JonCates, Robert Lawrence, and Leslie Raymond talked about their experiences as faculty members and directors in the field of New Media.

As a graduate student interested in teaching new media and art, I enjoyed listening to discussions about curriculum development and issues new media artists and teachers were dealing with. Both the panelists and participants talked about their teaching philosophy and the way they and their departments developed and updated their curriculum.

Listening to their opinion about how those teaching new media should be keeping up with the constant change and development of software and new media. Once again I was reminded that the path I will be taking will have a lot of challenges in order to be an “up-to-date instructor”, keeping up with the technology and the growth of the field of New Media.

A great discussion, but we only began to scratch the surface!! I would be happy to continue the discussion, and/or answer questions about my experience of starting the New Media Program in the Art & Art History Department of the University of Texas at San Antonio. Please feel free to drop me a line: Leslie.Raymond@utsa.edu.
