The Center for Instructional Technology would like to announce next week’s workshops.
The following workshops still have seats available:

Intro to Podcasting and iTunes University
Monday, November 2, 5:00pm-8:00pm
The iPod revolution is rapidly moving from delivering just music to being used in education as a portable learning tool. It allows access to lectures, speeches, audio books, etc. There are growing opportunities for teachers to create, distribute, and access audio and video learning materials. Columbia College has joined Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley and many other schools and started using Apple's iTunes University for easy podcast publishing. In this workshop you will learn the basics of podcasting and how to create and publish your own audio or video podcast with iTunes U.

Podcasting (7 Week Course)
Wednesdays, 5:00pm-8:00pm, beginning November 4
The iPod revolution is rapidly moving from delivering just music to being used in education as a portable learning tool. It allows access to lectures, speeches, audio books, etc. There are growing opportunities for teachers to create, distribute, and access audio and video learning materials. This project-based course will introduce you to the shooting and recording techniques as well as editing of audio, enhanced, and video podcasts. You should come to the course with an intention to produce a podcast for your class and you will leave with at least one finished episode.

***By signing up for the Podcasting Course you are signing up for all 7 3-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 7 workshops and complete a project will earn the CIT Certificate. Part-time faculty who complete all 7 workshops and complete a project will also receive a stipend in the amount of $200.00. Full-time staff who also teach part-time in Columbia do not qualify for a stipend. In addition, the participants who complete a project and attend all 7 workshops will gain access to CIT's podcasting equipment and facilities to work on their future podcasting projects.

Intro to Automator
Thursday, November 5, 5:00pm-8:00pm
If you’re a Mac user and find yourself doing time-consuming, repetitive tasks on your computer, meet Automator. You don’t need complex programming skills to understand it; just drag and drop different actions into a workflow, and Automator will turn all those individual steps into one automated action. You can use it in many different programs, including Finder, Safari, iCal, Address Book, and third-party applications like Microsoft Office or Photoshop. Take three hours to learn Automator and save yourself a lot of time every day!

Intro to Soundtrack Pro
Friday, November 6, 5:00pm-8:00pm
This 3-hour workshop is an introduction to a powerful sound design application: Soundtrack Pro. Soundtrack Pro 2 offers unprecedented convenience and power to editors. Fly through audio editing and mixing with a new, streamlined interface that combines the multitrack Timeline and Waveform Editor in a single view. Easily create immersive soundtracks with innovative surround sound tools. Automatically conform your audio edit to changes made in your video edit. With its familiar interface and intuitive tools, Soundtrack Pro is the Final Cut Pro of audio post-production.

Collaborate Online Using WIKIs
Wednesday, October 28, 11:00am-12:00pm
According to Wikipedia, "A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites." Wikipedia is an excellent example of a WIKI and the article discussing a WIKI was actually created as a collaborative effort of Wikipedia users. WIKIs can be used for variety of projects and are very easy to set up. Learn how in this workshop.

Clickers in Your Classroom
Thursday, October 29, 11:00am-12:00pm
TurningPoint audience response system allows students to participate in presentations or lectures by submitting responses to interactive questions. Students can answer questions in class and instantly see the class’s votes. You can use it to engage your students in lectures or quiz them before a test. Use it to create a report in PowerPoint, or use it outside of PowerPoint to ask questions about anything on the computer screen. Clickers can be used with Macs or PCs.

Del.icio.us Bookmarking
Wednesday, October 21, 11:00am-12:00pm
Del.icio.us website is the biggest social bookmarking site. Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search and manage bookmarks of web pages with the help of metadata. It doesn't sound too exciting at first, but social bookmarking is actually a concept that is sweeping the Internet. In this workshop you will learn how to start your own Del.icio.us account and how to best utilize its features.

Using MIMIO - A Portable SmartBoard
Thursday, October 22, 11:00am-12:00pm
MIMIO is an interactive board that allows for touch control over your projected screen, but also allows for recording of whiteboard sessions that are conducted with regular dry erase markers. In this hands-on training you will learn how to use a board like this and will have a chance to play with one in CIT's classroom.

Introduction to Motion
Friday, October 23, 5:00pm-8:00pm
This 3-hour workshop is an introduction to a powerful motion graphics application - Motion 3. Motion is a professional motion graphics design application that is a part of Apple's Final Cut Studio 2. Start animating right away with the easy-to-use tools and intuitive interface in Motion 3. You can see the results in real time as you work, and even adjust animation settings on the fly during playback. Be spontaneous. Explore. Experiment. Play. Just drag a behavior to the Canvas to set an object in motion, without any need to write expressions or manipulate keyframes.

Twitter can also have many applications in your classroom. In this workshop you will create your own Twitter account and learn how to utilize this exciting new technology in your classroom.

What You Should Know About YouTube

YouTube is not just for silly videos. This powerful video sharing site presents an opportunity for educators to present content in class but also collaborate, bookmark, interact, and monitor class participation. Teaching with Web 2.0
Wednesday, October 7, 11:00am-12:00pm
There have been many developments in recent years that change the way the internet is used. These developments created an opportunity for educators to utilize many of the WEB 2.0 and social networking tools in their classroom. This workshop will introduce the concept of WEB 2.0 and discuss ways to use tools like Twitter, YouTube, RSS, Social Bookmarking, etc. in the classroom.

Using Faculty Advising Tools in OASIS (5 Day Online Course)
Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9
The purpose of this class is to introduce faculty to the advising tools that are available in OASIS, help faculty understand the role of the campus advisor and the role of the faculty advisor and to discuss FERPA guidelines and regulations. The class runs for 5 consecutive days and is entirely online. You don't have to come to the CIT lab - you can complete all of your work in the comfort of your own home or office. Plan to spend about 25 minutes each day on reading and hands-on activities. This class is appropriate for both new full-time faculty and senior full-time faculty who would like a review of the advising tools. At the end of this course, faculty will be able to: * Correctly locate and operate the online Advising Tools in the Academic Portal OASIS * Understand the function of each of the Advising Tools * Utilize the appropriate Advising Tool in a given advising situation * Discuss FERPA guidelines with different constituencies (students, parents, staff, faculty, etc.) * Apply appropriate FERPA guidelines in a given advising or consulting situation
