CHICAGO, IL (January 5, 2009) – Another banner year of public programming in the performing, visual, literary and academic arts.
Fight the winter chill with Conversations in the Arts: The Founders Lectures with Anna Deavere Smith on January 27 and the opening of Congo/Women: Portraits of War – an exhibition of photography highlighting the strength and struggles of women in this war-torn nation – presented by Columbia’s The Ellen Stone Belic Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media. Also on the docket for Spring term is an outstanding array of thought-provoking programs in our Intersections lecture series, with Manga in America first up on February 11 and Critical Encounters: Human|Nature. The Library will be presenting public programming through the NEA-sponsored Big Read initiative, with Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 the subject of discussion. Columbia’s world renowned Center for Black Music Research will launch its Genius Without Borders series in March with a look at the Genius of Ray Charles. March will bring Fiction Writing’s hugely popular Story Week back with visits from many literary luminaries. And, of course the critically acclaimed Dance Center has a full season of outstanding contemporary concerts and our gallery spaces will offer the best in both professional and student visual arts. Please visit our calendar of events to check out more events and details and don’t forget to mark your calendars for May 15 when we once again celebrate the creativity of our graduating and senior students with Manifest, our quintessentially Columbia urban arts festival. -end-
