2009 Get Your Spot Shot Winners

Congratulations to our 2009 Get Your Spot Shot Winners!

See the winning concepts here.

The "Get Your Spot Shot" program began in 2007 as a means to give students the opportunity to see an idea through from concept to completion, collaborate with students in other departments, gain real world experience and create a work sample for their portfolio.

Advertising art and copywriting students are invited to submit their ideas for a 30-second spot along with a storyboard and treatment or script. Concepts are selected in the spring semester and then produced by a select group of film students in the summer.

And we foot the bill for all productions (up to $1000).

Columbia Grads Land Silver Telly Award

Chicago, IL – A group of Columbia College Chicago graduates from several disciplines have won a Silver Telly Award for “Impossible Is Nothing,” a spec commercial for Adidas produced for the 2008 “Get Your Spot Shot” program out of Columbia’s Portfolio Center. The Telly Awards were created in 1978 to strengthen the visual arts community by inspiring, promoting and supporting creativity. Entries are received from an international field of contestants.

“Impossible is Nothing” was a collaboration by creatives from several disciplines. Conceived by Ramon Davis of Marketing Communications and Winston Yanni from Advertising, Art Direction, the spot was directed by Vlady Oszkiel. Cinematography was by Jamieson Mulholland. Jill DiBiase served as editor and Quintin Radford produced. The production team all hailed from Film & Video.

"Being a part of this multi-department initiative was an invaluable experience in that it created a practical environment for students in different visual mediums to collaborate," said Radford.

The “Get Your Spot Shot” program is sponsored by Columbia’s Portfolio Center in conjunction with the Art & Design, Marketing Communication, and Film & Video Departments. Now entering its third cycle, the program gives advertising art and copywriting students the opportunity to submit 30-second spot ideas, along with a script and storyboards. The top three concepts are selected and then produced by film students. Each production uses a $1000 budget donated by the sponsoring departments.

“The need to collaborate with other departments is essential to prepare students for the real world. This was a real team effort,” says Alan Rado, one of last year’s Spot Shot faculty advisors. Rado, a former instructor at Columbia, initiated the project with the Portfolio Center because he felt, “advertising students needed an opportunity to take their ideas a step further.”

Tracy Nader, Senior Copywriter at Wunderman and a Spot Shot judge says, “It was great to see the breadth of work and talent that existed at Columbia. It was fun to get a glimpse of what today's students deem creative excellence and where their imaginations are taking them.”

All spots produced through the “Get Your Spot Shot” program can be viewed at www.colum.edu/spotshot

Temporary free file hosting and how you can use it with the WebAgent

Currently the WebAgent allows the account users to upload only one PDF file per account. If you feel that you have the need to offer multiple PDF files for download. Then you will want to follow these steps.

1. Upload the file that you wish to make available as a download on your WebAgent site to a free file hosting site.
(There are many websites that provide this service, so make sure you read their guidelines before you use their services. Some sites will only host your file for only 90days or for the first 10 downloads depending on which comes first. So you will obviously need to re-upload you file after it expires)

Here is a short list of some recommended sites.
http://rapidshare.com
http://www.mediafire.com/
http://www.megaupload.com/

2. After you have uploaded your file to the hosting site you will want to take the download link and use that as the URL of the hyperlink that you will create using the WYSIWYG in any of the text fields where the WYSIWYG is available.

3. Remember when creating a hyperlink in the WYSIWYG you will want that new link to open in a new window.

COLUMBIA ANNOUNCES SECOND ANNUAL INDUSTRY NIGHT

CHICAGO, IL - Columbia College Chicago, the country’s largest college of arts and media, is pleased to announce its second annual Industry Night–a college wide professional reception where the Chicago creative community at large is invited on campus to meet with the newly graduated students.

“Industry Night was hatched in 2008 as a chance to turn the tables on most college job fairs,” says Columbia College Portfolio Center director Tim Long. “The goal here is to obliterate the divisions between the different majors and present the students with a real world, real time networking opportunity.”

Since the initial event, Columbia College has expanded the night to include 14 receptions that showcase their students, bringing together members of the music, film, fashion, advertising, public relations, marketing, and performance community to meet with and inspire the roughly 2,000 students graduating.

“Career paths in creative fields are guided by relationships. What we are trying to do here is give students the social tools to begin building relationships that will continue throughout their creative career,” says Long. “We want our students to think about their work critically, to be comfortable talking about their passions and to be informed about industry expectations and timelines.”

The night was successful for Daphne Karagianis, now associate art director for interactive design agency Digitas; it helped her land a job. “I was excited to graduate but didn’t really know what I was going to do,” says 23 year old Karagianis “I had worked on my portfolio and was diligent meeting with people throughout my senior year, but to have an event where the industry came to me gave me an amazing amount of exposure.”

It was here that Bill Matznick, associate creative director for Digitas, met Karagianis along with more than 150 advertising, art and design students. “What was nice about Industry Night for us was that we really had an opportunity to engage with the students on our terms, in their backyard. The event was very forward thinking and the students seemed to rise up to that idea. To see so much young talent was encouraging, to see them in a real world format made it that much more exciting.”

Josh Modell, managing editor for The Onion’s AV Club, feels much the same, “We find more and more writers and photographers from Columbia and the way that the college positions itself is really interesting. The idea of networking, focusing on producing good work and educating the students on how to talk about their work is so much fresher–and more useful–than the notion of a grayed-out job fair.”

Industry Night is an initiative of Columbia College’s Portfolio Center. A one-of-its-kind resource center that aids students in the understanding, definition and execution of their portfolio materials; hiring fellow classmates in the construction and execution of their books, websites, business cards, CDs, or reels. The center also looks to get students engaged with industry as early as possible for feedback on those materials, bringing in recruiters and experts to talk about their expectations and experiences.

Industry Night functions as an extension of that philosophy. The events are lively and happen in real time. Those students who are interested in working in the music business promote a show at a local club; those interested in a career in dance host a cocktail hour with the dance community before a recital concert; students with a degree in fiction writing hobnob not only with publishers but also journalists and PR companies. The divisions are not academic, rather real world.

“It is so important that the outside world is not an abstract for these students,” says Portfolio Center creative industry liaison Caroline Cook Juhlin. “That they can meet with established professionals and see that what they are dreaming of is obtainable, that it might not be the out-the-gate home run we all hope for, but if you work hard, stay connected and follow through… anything is possible.”

Industry Night opens May 14th 2009 runs in concert with Columbia College’s Manifest Urban Arts Festival (May 15th, 2009) and is part of the college’s commencement weekend.
