Essay Contest: What Do We Look Like When We Are at Our Best?

We were in a meeting recently and heard someone ask "What does Columbia look like when we're at our best?" We were intrigued, and yet also oddly flummoxed. So as not to stammer and feel awkward, we turn to you to provide an answer.

We're not looking for anything specific. Just your take on it.

Here's how this works. Post your answers below. In a week or two, we'll read them over and pick a winner or winners. What will win? We have no idea. Be creative, be articulate, be thoughtful, be a little snarky if you want ... Do like we do, and make it up as you write.

The prize? An iPod (sorry, not an iTouch), and a virtual cornucopia of gift cards to Jewel-Osco, Epic Burger, The Columbia bookstore, ShopColumbia, and Threadless. Well over $250 worth of swag.

So ... What does Columbia look like when we're at our best?

UPDATED! Columbia Radio student Bill Coon has a new heart!

Donate Life

At Bill's request, we'd like to ask everyone to consider registering with the Illinois organ/tissue donor registry. You can find out how on the website, Donate Life Illinois.

William CoonIf you've been following along, you know our classmate, Radio and Marketing student William (Bill) Coon has been holding out hope for a new heart and kidney. Well ... he got 'em.

On Thursday, October 22nd, 2009, after almost sixty days of waiting, Bill underwent a 20 hour transplant procedure ... and .... it looks good!

We'll keep you posted with what we hear. Drop Bill a little note of support if you have a second, and let him know we look forward to having him back with us this Spring (no rush Bill ... take your time, we're saving your spot!)

In the first five weeks of the semester I plan to ... ?

Take a moment to share your plans, schemes, dreams, and fears about the first five weeks of Fall 2009 at Columbia. One lucky students will get a $25 gift certificate to the Columbia Bookstore.

What questions do you have?

We're building something pretty useful for new students and we need your help. We don't know what it's like to be a new student here anymore. It was too long ago, we're too jaded, and our capacity for new information is diminishing rapidly.

That's where you come in. We think we do a pretty decent job of keeping you, the new student, informed about what to do when, where to do it, and why do it at all. But we could be wrong.

Take a moment to let us know what we didn't tell you. Tell us what questions you have, what you're nervous about, what you wish you knew earlier in the process.

If you share your thoughts, we'll make sure someone answers your question AND we'll use your question to build our new student guide. Make sense?

Semester in a sentence

We thought maybe you could sum up the Spring 2009 semester for us ... in your words ... in a single sentence. See if you can boil down your last (15) weeks into a coherent thought. As always, there's a little something ($25 gift certificate to Target, and two $10 Jewel-Osco cards) for three students who find a clever way to put it all in one single sentence.

What should we work on first first?

Thanks to the forty or so students who participated in one of the Student Life focus groups. We appreciate it, and we heard you loud and clear. We'll get to work this summer and do some housecleaning. For the rest of you, help us prioritize which initiatives you think are most important.
