Many people have emailed us requesting access to Google Analytics so that they can view the metrics associated with their portion of our site. As a department, we couldn't be happier that people are taking an interest in objectively reviewing the metrics for their site. Unfortunately, the way that access to Analytics was granted in the past isn't very sustainable on our end.
Each request for Analytics access requires us to set up a user and a profile. Sometimes, we need to create a new segment as well. With so many users, segments and profiles, it is hard to keep track of who has access to what. In the past, we've created individual profiles for each sub-section of the site that a user wants to track. All of this is a lot of work and confusion for our group.
Web Development has come up with a better, more unified way to gather statistics and manage users within Google Analytics. This new method will reduce the setup time required for each Analytics account and give our department a more robust overview of web traffic across all our properties.
Today, we started migrating all our sites toward this new way of gathering statistics. It requires us to change the statistics reporting code on many pages. What this means is that if you are a current Analytics user, the numbers in your segment may drop to zero in the next day or two.
Do not panic. Your Analytics accounts will not be deleted and the statistics for your site are still being collected. Within the next week, instructions will be posted that will demonstrate how to access your site's statistics.
